Graphics in Gaming

Today we studied a presentation which was created by the founder of Naughty Dog, Jason Rubin. The presentation looked at various types and forms of graphics across the decades and how they have been portrayed, improved and changed across the years of game creation. We also discussed the subject of whether the improvement of graphics is the driving force for the mass gamer market.

In my opinion I do not think improved graphics is the drive for the mass market but It is defiantly the drive for a more specific market such as sport games like, FIFA, F1 and other popular racing games and also graphics can be the drive for a lot of "casual" gamers. Where as there is a much larger market looking for improved gameplay aspects, and this can be proven by looking at the sale facts of games such as Minecraft, "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition tops 8 million sales".  Minecraft has a very retro and classic graphical look to it by using pixel based graphics but on the other hand, it had an industry changing game mechanic.

Donkey Kong

After watching King of Kong (A Fistful of Quarters), I desperately wanted to try the game for myself and see how difficult it really is made out to be throughout the documentary. 13,000 was the highest score I could get after playing the game for just under 10 minutes and although I have only played the game for a short amount of time, I felt instantly addicted and kept coming back to even just beat my own score. I can see how easily this was one of the best video games ever created due to its simplicity but yet so addictive and fun. I also can see the resemblance to most modern plat formers on how they are trying to recreate the difficulty of Donkey Kong.

You can play Donkey Kong for free online here, freekong.org and you can also read up about the documentary here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/.
